Kia, Then and Now

Original Kia SephiaWhen the Kia Corporation was founded under the name “Kyungsung Precision Industry” in 1944 to manufacture steel tubing and bicycle parts, we feel quite confident in saying they never envisioned the Kia of today. But what a journey it’s been!

In 1951 they began producing complete bicycles. By the following year they became Kia … and the fun began. Under the Kia name, they built motorcycles starting in 1957; trucks in 1962; and cars in 1974.

In 1992, Kia was incorporated in the United States. The first Kia-branded vehicles were sold from four dealerships in the Portland, Oregon area in February 1994. At that time, the only Kia offering was the Sephia (pictured above); two years later, the Sportage was added. By 1995, there were more than 100 Kia dealerships in 30 states, with sales of nearly 25,000 automobiles.

Today, Kia offers more than a dozen exciting cars, SUVs and minivans, combined with the industry’s best new-car warranty. Kia of North Grand Rapids is proud to bring these products to you every day.

Kia Sedona Chosen as “Ultimate Minivan” by Industry Experts

Sedona Ultimate MinivanExperts from and the popular PBS show Motorweek were recently brought together to determine the best fully-loaded van on the market today. In addition to the 2015 Kia Sedona, the competitors included the 2015 versions of the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country (note: Nissan was asked for a Quest minivan, but they declined to participate).

The scoring was broken out as follows:

65 percent from the judges’ scoring

15 percent from randomly chosen family shoppers

10 percent from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash-test scores (100 bonus points for Top Safety Pick Plus, 50 bonus points for Top Safety Pick and zero points for vans that failed the small overlap test)

10 percent from the mileage drive

In announcing its winner of “The Ultimate Minivan Challenge,” the experts had this to say about the winner, the Kia Sedona: “The all-new Kia Sedona is a champion of quality and refinement. A great ride combined with a quiet cabin and numerous innovative features made the Sedona an obvious selection as the ultimate minivan.”

The Kia’s Sedona’s “Ultimate Minivan Challenge” win comes on the heels of other recent accolades for this multi-purpose model, such as receiving the J.D. Power Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Award in the minivan segment and being named to Ward’s 10 Best Interiors list.  For full results and scoring details on the Ultimate Minivan Challenge, visit

Peter Schreyer’s Contributions to Kia Can’t Be Understated

Peter Schreyer

The design of any new vehicle is of utmost importance, regardless of brand. That’s why every automaker spends a great deal of money, time and manpower to come up with the best product possible. Kia is fortunate to have one of the best working for us, specifically Peter Schreyer, its Chief Design Officer.

Many believe Kia’s march to prominence began when Schreyer was hired away from Audi in 2006 – and we at Kia of North Grand Rapids wouldn’t disagree. It’s no wonder he was chosen as the 2012 Automobile magazine “Man of the Year”.

In giving him the award, they said the following: Kia cars were once nondescript tin boxes of no particular consequence in the grand scheme of things, sold on price and certainly not as world-class desirable objects. Today’s Kia range is admired, respected, even envied. Its cars are well-made, good performers, and — above all — good-looking. That quality can essentially be attributed to one man, Peter Schreyer.
